An Important message: Applause during the Liturgy

An important liturgical message from Cardinal Ratzinger - now Pope Benedict XVI

"Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment. " (Spirit of the Liturgy p. 198)

If you should encounter applause during Mass in your parish do not panic. Immediately after Mass go out and get a copy of Pope Benedict's book "The Spirit of the Liturgy" by Ignatius Press and give it to your pastor as a gift. Be sure to highlight the above passage on page 198. Yellow highlighter works really, really well.

At one Parish we attend, the choir sings a short hymn after the conclusion of Mass, and the husband of a choir member always claps loudly when they finish. Sometimes, others clap with him. Now, this is after Mass is over, the Priest has left the Sanctuary, but many faithful are still kneeling and praying. So, is this a liturgical abuse, or just bad taste?

I've been tempted to demand this man stop, but I haven't said anything thus far. This has gone on for quite some time.

If Mass is over it would seem to me less of an abuse but more a case of inconsiderateness (towards those trying to pray).Indeed it is possible that, lacking an ability to sing, the poor fellow wishes to express thanks to those who have supplied his deficiency. That is the charitable response. On the other hand there's no knowing what a good kicking might achieve!

In my opinion it is bad taste. People are praying and deserve the time after recieving communion to adore our Lord in silence.

I believe Ratzinger was making a very good point here in his book. The Liturgy is not about entertainment. It is about due worship in Spirit and Truth to God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ.

There are some moments where applause takes place in the Liturgy. For example during the Ordination rite. However, this applause is not in response to a musical piece just played, or for a dance performed. It is to acknowledge the worthiness of the candidates for the priesthood. There is a difference.

I would add that this may be sort of abuse because the choir may feel that the Mass needs this additional "performance" as if the Mass was not sufficient for a proper encounter with the Lord, Jesus Christ. At a minimum, bad taste indeed.

Mike, hope all is well.

Under the Mercy,
Mark

I know a few parishes in my area that could use that book, and that passage within.

I applaud your quote!!! The applause level at our parish has led our family to nickname it the Lions Club.
My sense of the sacredness lost in frequent hand clapping was preceeded by Pope Benedict's description: "religious entertainment."

It must really annoy the Pope when all that applause breaks out during some of his own public Liturgies!
